This is a continuation of my previous blog post, follow this link to read part 1. This post will detail the setup of the on-premises Exchange 2013 server. I had installed a Windows Server 2012 server and have added it to my O365vNext.com domain. I have downloaded the Exchange 2013 server ISO to get the server installed. I am using the below two resources to assist with the Exchange 2013 install:

Exchange 2013 Prerequisites

Install Exchange 2013 using the Setup Wizard

Following the Steps in the Prerequisites here is what I did (again I am going to be installing Exchange 2013 on Server 2012):

  1. Launched PowerShell with Administrative rights

  1. Issued the “Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-ADDS” command

  1. Issued the “Install-WindowsFeature AS-HTTP-Activation, Desktop-Experience, NET-Framework-45-Features, RPC-over-HTTP-proxy, RSAT-Clustering, RSAT-Clustering-CmdInterface, Web-Mgmt-Console, WAS-Process-Model, Web-Asp-Net45, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Http-Errors, Web-Http-Logging, Web-Http-Redirect, Web-Http-Tracing, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console, Web-Metabase, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Net-Ext45, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-Server, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Static-Content, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-WMI, Windows-Identity-Foundation” Command and then rebooted the server

  1. After the reboot I installed the additional software as needed for both the Mailbox and CAS roles per the prerequisites link

After installing all the prerequisites, I moved on to the Exchange 2013 install, following the instructions from the link above:

  1. Launched Setup.Exe from this ISO/DVD and kept the default to ‘Connect to the Internet and check for updates’ and click next

  1. No updates found, clicked next

  1. Coping Files

  1. Copy completed and went automatically to ‘Initializing Setup…’

  1. Reviewed the Introduction and clicked next

  1. Made the decision to go ahead and accept the terms and clicked next

  1. Selected the ‘Don’t use recommended settings’ as I am a geek and want to have more control over the install, clicked next

  1. Selected Mailbox and Client Access Role, clicked next

  1. Left the default location and clicked next

  1. Named my Exchange Organization and clicked next

  1. Accepted the default to keep Malware scanning enabled, clicked next

  1. Readiness Check stage

  1. Since I choose not to prepare AD prior to install this warning was expected, clicked install

  1. Installing

  1. Still installing…

  1. Installed Completed!

While the install of Exchange 2013 was going and going and going I decided to get my Office 365 vNext Preview Tenant setup for my O365vNext.com Domain. I added the domain and verified it. Once verified I went ahead and setup the required DNS settings:
